THE ITINERARY

Day 1: Southern Ocean Lodge

Morning

After breakfast Greg will meet at 6am with those of you who wish to utilize the morning light and travel to Remarkable Rocks for the opportunity to photograph these incredible formations at first light. Greg will be advising you on using light and shadow to best compose your images as the sunrise creates dramatic change in texture and color.

Lunch

From there we travel a short distance to Admiral’s Arch where we will have an opportunity to photograph the sea cave and the Sea Lions, and Fur Seal colonies that bask in the sun and play in it’s surrounds.  We then enjoy an elegant picnic lunch in the wilderness of Flinders Chase National Park.

Afternoon

After lunch we return to the lodge (around 3pm) where we can enjoy some free time or join Greg for the optional 1 hour photoshop class where we load and edit the work to date. At 5pm we join other guests and prepare for sunset photographs and drinks before dinner.

Evening

After dinner there is an optional 1 hour discussion and critique session led by Greg where participants are invited to view each others work and receive feedback and suggestions on edits, composition, cropping and photoshop tips.

Optional

For those who don’t wish to photograph the Remarkables your guide will meet you in the Lodge at 0900 to go through some itinerary options on a map. A suggestion includes the Remarkable Rocks - natural cliff top granite sculptures, Cape du Couedic Lighthouse settlement, Admiral's Arch sea cave and a fur-seal colony accessed by a sweeping boardwalk through a beautiful natural bonsai garden formed by the salt-laden winds off the Southern Ocean. Enjoy an elegant picnic lunch in the wilderness of Flinders Chase National Park, perhaps a walk to the coast down the Rocky River, stopping to look for platypus in the deep rock pools along the way.  Seek out koalas in the wild in the top of the Rocky River valley and return to the lodge around 4.30pm for some leisure time before joining other Lodge guests for sunset drinks before dinner.

Day 2: Southern Ocean Lodge

Morning

Meet Greg at 7am for our drive to the sea lion colony at Seal Bay where we join our local guide. We’ll learn techniques that ensure the best results when photographing wildlife. After a short stop for morning coffee and a snack we will move on to Vivonne Bay and the challenge of seascape photography. We’ll learn about lens selection and how to utilize our polarizer and neutral density filters for optimal results.  Perhaps an optional beach fishing experience before breakfast in the Great Room.  Your guide will meet you at the time arranged the day before and begin another day exploring Kangaroo Island. Suggestions today include a visit to 'Rustic Blue' gallery - a collection of unique local art, photography, hand-made jewelry and gifts produced by friends of the gallery owners across Australia - a welcome change from the ubiquitous range found in most Australian destinations.  Explore Point Ellen and Vivonne Bay - assessed by Sydney University's Marine Studies Centre as the best of 10,000 of Australia's beaches!

Lunch

Take a private tour of the Australian sea-lion colony at Seal Bay with your guide where you can walk on the beach where one of the most endangered seal species on earth rests between fishing trips.  Take a break from touring with a seafood barbeque lunch at a private bush lunch-site - your guide has to change hats and become Chef.

Afternoon

After lunch explore the habitat of kangaroos, wallabies and an endangered cockatoo - walking quietly through the bush along the animal tracks. A great opportunity for more wildlife photographs. We'll concentrate on how to capture the best action shots and learn the focusing and exposure techniques that professional wildlife photographers employ for consistently sharp and perfectly exposed photographs of animals on the move!

Depending upon your interests you might like to visit an isolated cove for a beach walk or a swim, go wine tasting at Two Wheeler Creek, or continue with more wildlife observation at Grassdale in Kelly Hill Conservation Park.  Return to the Lodge and relax before dinner. An optional one-hour photoshop class led by Greg is available before dinner to those who wish to participate.

Dinner

Optional natural history presentation after dinner. Also after dinner, for those who wish, there is also an optional one-hour discussion and critique session led by Greg where participants are invited to view each others work and receive feedback and suggestions on edits, composition, cropping, and photoshop tips.

Day 3: Southern Ocean Lodge

Morning

Optional sleep-in or embark on a pre-sunrise photographic walkabout with Greg.

Free Time

Free time this morning or an optional one-hour photoshop class where we focus on techniques we'll need to employ for this evenings photographing Kangaroos and Koala at Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Afternoon

At 3:00pm, travel to Hanson Bay Via Flinders Chase National Park. At Hanson Bay we get up close and personal with kangaroos before embarking on The Koala Walk (sunset) where we take a fully guided 90-minute walk with one of our experienced tour guides in our fenced, feral-free area of 250 acres. Discover and learn about the nocturnal animals of Kangaroo Island in their natural habitat and environment. View koalas, Tammar wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas, bats and opossums. Take in the spectacular view of the Great Southern Skies on this fun, exciting, and educational discovery walk. Our guided nocturnal walk is a must where we learn about and photograph these primarily nocturnal Aussie icons. This is a great opportunity to learn how to best utilize high iso and lens combinations.

French doors open to a private shaded rear terrace with table and chairs facing the adjacent vineyard.

ABOUT BAROSSA VALLEY:

Perhaps the most Germanic region in Australia, the Barossa Valley combines old world charm with world class wine. Luxury labels, including Penfolds, Henschke, and Rockfords, are proudly displayed next to smoked meats, pastries and freshly baked breads. Producing nearly one-fourth of the nation's wine is hard work and locals wind down with day trips to the historic hamlet of Bethany, cycling through the valleys of grapevines or hosting the boisterous Barossa Vintage Festival. It is an impressive liquid lineup with renowned labels such as Jacob's Creek starring regularly on dinner tables the world over.  At the other extreme this is the home to every auctioneer and collector's dream, the hallowed turf that produces none other than Penfold's Grange Hermitage. Why not experience the best of the wine growing region with A Taste of South Australia. Their expert guides ooze information that will educate you on this spectacularly scenic locale as well as tantalize your taste buds with some locally grown gourmet foods.

Day 5: The Louise

We'll find out the best lenses to use and some trade secrets about using color, light and shadow to compose great spontaneous images of people and activity that Greg has learned over his 30 years as a news photographer

As part of this, you will experiment with several trial blends of barrel sample shiraz, grenache and mourvedre before choosing a final blend that is bottled with your name and date.

Appellation has developed a memorable way to complete this experience. Transfers are not included, if required these may be arranged at additional cost.

Day 6: The Louise – Breakfast with Kangaroos

Morning

It's no secret that most visitors to South Australia's Barossa Valley have come for a world-class food and wine experience.  The global reputation of the Barossa's iconic wines is undisputed, and fine dining venues such as Appellation, provide guests access to fresh local cuisine paired with the region's outstanding wines. Lesser known, the Barossa is home to a large conservation park abundant with native Australian flora and fauna. The Louise has developed a unique experience that offers guests access to one of the simple pleasures of visiting regional Australia, seeing kangaroos up close in their natural habitat.

Your guide arrives at dawn in a 4-wheel drive vehicle for the 20-minute ride to the nearby conservation park.  An easy 15-minute bushwalk into the park leads to a clearing where families of kangaroos are enjoying their breakfast and your gourmet breakfast will be laid out on a picnic blanket in this truly natural setting.

This is not a petting tour and is not for children, but is a memorable way to engage with Australia's most unique living icons.  Breakfast with the Kangaroos affords a great photo. We photograph the Kangaroos “up close and personal!” Greg will share a secret about how to capture something truly unique when presented with this type of very close wildlife photography.

Afternoon
